What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam evaluates your overall gynecological health. At this appointment, you get the screenings you need to stay healthy. You get a chance to talk with the team at The Practice of Health and Wellness about your particular health concerns.

Well-woman exams are a necessary part of your health care from youth until after menopause. What happens during a typical exam can change depending on your stage of life and particular concerns. The visit remains an essential part of maintaining your good health.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam usually begins with a review of your health history and any changes to it. The team gathers information about your height, weight, blood pressure, and other vitals. This data becomes part of your personal medical record.

The team also reviews any symptoms you’re experiencing. This helps them to determine if you need specialized screenings.

You’ll also undergo a pelvic exam to check your cervix and vagina. A Pap smear, which involves taking a small sample of cells from your cervix, is done to check for cancer signs. A clinical breast exam is also done to check for lumps or abnormalities.

What screenings are included in women’s health care?

The Pap smear is an essential check on your cervical health. This simple test isn’t painful, though you might feel a slight pressure as the provider swabs your cervix to collect cells. The cells are sent to a lab for evaluation.

If your test comes back “abnormal,” it’s not a diagnosis of cancer. It merely means you should have additional tests to find the reason for the abnormal cells and, if needed, have them removed.

Blood tests and urine tests can also be part of your women’s health visit. In addition to regular screenings for cholesterol and blood sugar, blood tests can be used to check your hormones and see if you’re moving toward menopause. Urine screenings are used to check for a potential infection.
